I just saw the movie Away We Go, an indie movie about a couple who’s expecting a baby and trying to find out where they belong.
The main reason I wanted to see the movie was because of John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. I love John as “Jim” on The Office, and Maya is so good on Saturday Night Live, but I wanted to see them in different roles. The roles of these expectant parents were definitely different for these actors…especially Maya. She was SO different because she had to just be more subtle and serious. Normally on SNL she’s so outrageous. She did a great job playing a woman who’s expecting a baby, but it very concerned/worried about what their plans are/how they’re going to handle everything once the baby comes…
For some reason, John Krasinski can’t quite escape “Jim” in any of his roles…I think it may be because there’s a bit of Jim in John…so it’ll just automatically come out no matter what. He was very cute and provided nice comic relief to a somewhat serious movie.
There were some notable celebrity actors throughout the movie…all very DIFFERENT characters. Catherine O’Hara (the mom from the Home Alone movies), Jeff Daniels (the “dad” from the live-action 101 Dalmations…he sure looked old in this one), Maggie Gyllenhaal (from The Dark Knight), and Allison Janney (The West Wing, Juno). All of them were so good playing so many different, quirky characters that this couple comes in contact with while trying to find where they want to settle down and live for when the baby’s born.
I would recommend this movie. It’s nothing fancy or anything, but it’s a really cute story with a lot of comedy and drama, a bit of quirkiness, but also with a bit of heart…very good mixture!
