THE VOICE 4/23/12: Katrina Parker — Jar of Hearts

I still love Katrina Parker…

Loved the song choice, and I LOVED how she changed bits & pieces here and there to make it her own!I voted for her…And she was able to escape the immediate boot at the end…but she was in the Bottom last week, so I hope America sees what I see! She deserves to stay in the competition!

THE VOICE: JORDIS UNGA — A Little Bit Stronger

Well, I’m NOT a happy camper. I can’t believe that Blake booted Jordis tonight! WTH?! So I HAD to post her performance from tonight, which I thought was just GREAT! It was so DIFFERENT (I mean, this is a SARA EVANS song.  Country?  For Jordis?  Cool!)  for her, and she sang it really well! I still really love her…and wish she was still in the competition!

I know she’s been trying to make it for a while now…I hope someone picks her up/she finds a way to make it…’Cause she deserves it!

THE VOICE 4/9/12: Katrina Parker – Tonight Tonight

The second of the live shows aired on The Voice. My favorite? Not surprisingly, it was Katrina Parker.

Loved her in the earlier rounds, and still love her. I love that they gave her a Smashing Pumpkins song, which is totally out of her comfort zone, yet she still made it her own…kept it in her style. Love her retro/old fashioned vibe. And her voice is just GREAT. I voted for her…Hoping she’ll make it! She has a bit of a tough road because she did go first last night…There were 11 other people who performed after her. So she could easily fall thru the cracks.

Crossing my fingers!

THE VOICE 4/2/12: Jordis Unga — Alone

It’s the first week of the live shows on The Voice.  Blake’s & Christina’s teams peformed live for America’s votes.  Of all the performances, it’s really no surprise that I would post only one:

SUCH a perfect song choice for Jordis.  LOVED how she changed up the verses a bit, and kept it all vulnerable and “quiet”…Then she really BELTED it out in the choruses!  Awesome!  LOVE HER!

THE VOICE 3/19/12: Battle Rounds — Katrina vs Angel

Had to post this one battle from tonight’s episode.

Besides Jordis Unga, who I blogged about before, Katrina Parker is my next favorite. I just love her vibe (can you say Adele?), and her voice is awesome. I also love her look…very retro and old fashioned. And Katrina had to beat out Angel, who was totally decent in her own right. I just love tho that Katrina, who is more “old school,” beat out Angel, who is SO mainstream. LOVE IT.

Totally looking forward to seeing Katrina perform in the live rounds!

THE VOICE : Jordis vs Brian — “Ironic” (Battle Round)

The Battle Rounds have begun on The Voice! Still my favorite contestant, Jordis Unga had to battle against Brian Fuente singing Alanis Morissette’s Ironic.

Umm, imo there was NO CONTEST. There’s just something about Jordis. She’s just GOT IT. Her voice is awesome…She can sound so pretty, yet get down and gritty/rocky. LOVE THAT. Not to mention she even got a little emotional. Not sure why, but she seemed to have a hard time getting through the song. Maybe it’s nerves. In any case, that just made her performance even more authentic.

The way Blake was talking, I was worried that Jordis wasn’t going to make it!  Thank goodness Blake hears what we all hear!  Jordis FTW!

JORDIS UNGA: The Voice – Blind Audition 2/13/12

Not sure how many of you watched Rockstar: INXS years ago, but one of my favorite contestants from that show, Jordis Unga (she didn’t win), auditioned for The Voice tonight!

To refresh your memory, here was Jordis doing one of the most memorable performance of that season of Rockstar:  INXS:

Jordis sounded just as awesome tonight as I remember her back then! And she made it! She got to choose between Cee-Lo, Christina & Blake…and she went with Blake!

Can’t wait to hear her perform this season!

THE VOICE: SuperBowl Commercial

The Voice mentors are “fighting it out” on their SuperBowl commercial. Pretty cool commercial with a special guest at the end!

Enjoy!

NEW SHOW PREVIEW: Smash

I’m sure many of you have heard about the new show Smash coming to NBC this fall.  Well, they show a preview of it last night during The Voice.  One if its stars, Katharine McPhee (American Idol Season 5 runner-up) came on to promote the show.

After watching the preview, I gotta say…I’m QUITE EXCITED about it!  It looks really good!  Kat looks and sounds AWESOME.  Not to mention that Debra Messing (Will & Grace) and Angelica Huston are in the show as well.  Megan Hilty (I saw her in Wicked when I saw the show for the first time!) is also one of the main starts, which is so cool…she’s a pretty big Broadway girl.  But watching it, I didn’t realize that Kat really is kinda like the STAR of that show!  Wow, what a huge opportunity for her!  I’m quite interested to see how she does with the whole acting thing.  Doing a weekly show like this is HUGE.  I mean, she’ll be on EVERY WEEK!

Kinda can’t wait for this show…!  Altho people compare it to Glee, to me it doesn’t seem to have THAT MANY similarities to it…other than the singing.  This one seems like it will also gear more towards the Broadway side.  Definitely more “adult” than Glee in a lot of ways.

See what you think.  Here’s the preview from last night (including the intro with Carson Daly & Kat):

Here’s another longer trailer I found:

Doesn’t it look GOOD?!

THE VOICE 6/28/11: Top 4 Performances + *POLL*

Well, this it is.  We have come to the FINAL FOUR!  Beverly, Dia, Javier & Vicci.  Who will it be?

The contestants each performed an ORIGINAL SONG:

JAVIER  Stitch by Stitch:

Javier’s songs/performance always sound SO MAINSTREAM.  You can totally hear his stuff on the radio.  Good job.  I still think he’s a BIT overrated, but he definitely deserves to be in the Final 4…and I know America loves him.  But I have no idea how he stacks up against these 3 girls…

DIA  Inventing Shadows:

That song was PERFECT for Dia.  I just LOVE how she does all the inflections in her voice when she sings!  To be honest, of the Top 4, Dia’s album would be the first one I would buy.  I like her sound and style.  Very “singer/songwriter.”  Great job Dia!

Oh, and if iTunes is at ALL a gauge/telling:

iTunes downloads is only ONE form of voting, but still…Hmm…

VICCI  Afraid To Sleep:

I have to say that Vicci really didn’t impress me in the early rounds.  But now having seen her every week, she really has grown on me, and has a much bigger voice than I thought she did.  Great song…matched her well.

BEVERLY  Lovesick:

I’ve said it time and time again…but every time I watch Bev perform, I feel like I’m at the concert of an artist who’s been a huge success for years!  She’s just THAT GOOD.  This song, like pretty much all the original songs, fit Bev so well.  When she laid down on the piano…that was awesome!  Go Bev!

Besides the solos, the contestants each performed with their coach:

DIA & BLAKE  I Won’t Back Down:

The song wasn’t the most exciting thing, but they sounded great.  Loved the sunglasses…nice touch!  The relationship between Dia & Blake is just SO SWEET.  You can tell they’ve created a friendship that will last for a long time!  Aww!

BEV & CHRISTINA  Beautiful:

The fact that Christina picked one of her OWN songs to sing with Bev…that was pretty awesome.  Beautiful  is probably one of her biggest hits!  Now this performance just showed/proved to everyone that not only can Bev rock it out…but she can really show the vulnerable/artistic side of her performance as well!  It was a great arrangement.  So showy!

JAVIER & ADAM  Man In The Mirror:

This is one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs…and as with someone so iconic, no one can really do a song of his justice.  Javier & Adam sounded totally fine, but it just wasn’t necessarily a “blow me out of the water” performance.  Good tho.

VICCI & CEE LO  Love Is A Battlefield:

Now with Cee Lo, you KNOW that you won’t EVER get subtle…and his duet with Vicci was no exception.  I mean…just look at Cee Lo’s outfit! :)   Great way to end the show tho…SO over the top!  Cute with the kid dancers as backup.

Great night of performances…but now the question is:

THE VOICE 6/21/11: Semifinals

8 people performed…only 4 will make it to the final round.

Here’s MY FINAL FOUR:

TEAM CEE LO – VICCI MARTINEZ  Dog Days Are Over:

  • Dang…Team Cee Lo is a tough call.  They were both great.  But I will go with Vicci JUST because of the drum factor.  I thought that was SO COOL.  Not to mention I LOVE this Florence + the Machine song!  :)
  • Oh, and BTW…Adam Levine NEVER heard of Adam Lambert’s song Whataya Want From Me?!  Are you kidding me?!  ANOTHER VERY famous song that he doesn’t know?!  Is he living under a rock?!  Man.

TEAM BLAKE – DIA FRAMPTON  Losing My Religion:

  • I’m liking Dia more and more every week!  Love that she changed it up and played guitar this week!  Wouldn’t have expected her to sing an REM song.  Oh…and I LOVED that clapping part.  Awesome.

TEAM CHRISTINA – BEVERLY MCCLELLAN  The Thrill Is Gone:

  • Every time I watch Beverly perform, it’s like I’m watching a seasoned performer.  She’s just awesome.  And this week she got to show the more vulnerable side of her.  Not much else I can say.  Love her.

TEAM ADAM – JAVIER COLON  Fix You:

  • Javier is definitely probably the most obvious shoe-in for next week.  The guy IS GOOD.  But he’s also NOT an amateur…he’s had record deals before, singles, etc.  But he’s still pretty humble, and that Coldplay song was a great choice for him.  Happy he took his hat off…made him more vulnerable and accessible to the audience.  Smart move.

THE VOICE 6/14/11: Team Cee Lo vs Team Adam + *POLL*

The 2nd half of the quarterfinals performed…Team Cee Lo and Team Adam.  Here are the standouts:

CASEY WESTON  Black Horse & the Cherry Tree:

I was NOT impressed with Casey during the auditions.  I remember when Adam picked her and I was like…NO!  She wasn’t that good.  But seeing her tonight?  She was a LOT better.  Must’ve been a BIT tough for her since it seemed like she wasn’t too keen on that arrangement…she wanted a more mellow, slow version.  But Casey did a great job with it!  Her voice sounded a LOT better than I remember!  She may not be as seasoned as some of the others…but she’s got potential!

VICCI MARTINEZ  Jolene:

Vicci was another one that I wasn’t too impressed with in the Battle Round.  But now hearing her sing alone…she’s got a great voice!  I wouldn’t have necessarily picked a Dolly Parton song for her to sing…but she really pulled it off!  Great job!

NAKIA  Sex on Fire:

Nakia really does have a great voice.  He’s very consistent.  And he’s great because he’s unorthodox.  He just does what he does…and does it well.

JAVIER COLON  Angel:

Everyone who has been watching this show knows that Javier is a FAN FAVORITE.  And watching him perform, you’ll immediately see why.  The guy’s got something special.  Just the way he performs.  Great song choice too.  He was able to once again make it his own.  The ONLY bit of criticism I have is that for ME, he did a LITTLE BIT too much with the runs.  Sometimes he could’ve just held out a strong, pure note WITHOUT any runs attached to it.  But other than that, can’t deny that the guy is GOOD.

Now for the team performances:

TEAM CEE LO  Everyday People:

Umm…Without a doubt the WORST team performance. :(   It was NOT good.  Gotta love Cee Lo’s sense of performance and style…but gotta focus more on VOCALS.  They were not good.  Especially Curtis and Tory&Taylor. *ouch*  Vicci & Nakia sounded great, but even they couldn’t save that number.

TEAM ADAM  With A Little Help from My Friends:

OK, now THIS was a lot better.  Nice song choice…song filled with much comraderie. :)

Hmm, I think this week’s voting results will be more difficult.

What did YOU think?

THE VOICE 6/7/11: Team Blake vs Team Christina + *POLL*

Blake & Christina’s teams performed live for America tonight for the first time.  It really was a great show.  These contestants are all quite good…and the performances are a LOT bigger than those on AI.

Altho 8 of them performed, here are just my favorites of the night:

BEVERLY MCCLELLAN (Team Xtina)  I’m The Only One:

Wow.  Beverly is GOOD.  That was an AWESOME performance.  She really comes across as a SEASONED PRO.  Yes, her look is a BIT unconventional…but when you watch her, you don’t even think about it.  At least I don’t.  I REALLY like her.  And to think that she was SICK…can’t believe it!

DIA FRAMPTON (Team Blake)  Heartless:

Remember when Kris Allen did this song on AI?!  His version was great (considering I’m not a fan of Kanye West AT ALL)…and Dia’s version?  AMAZING!  Dia is so interesting ’cause she’s so shy…she really is so mellow and low key.  Even when she’s just standing there on stage after she performs…not too much emotion.  But yet I KNOW she wants this…and WANTS to be there.  I LOVED what she did with the song…loved that she played piano.  She did some awesome things vocally with the arrangement as well.  One of the best things about Dia is that she doesn’t do TOO MUCH.

PATRICK THOMAS (Team Blake)  I Hope You Dance:

Wasn’t necessarily the biggest fan of Patrick’s in the blind audition round…but now?  Kinda like him.  He has a really strong, pure voice.  His story about how he dedicated this performance to his sister was just…so touching.  It was actually pretty cool to see a guy singing this song.  When he changed key…that was great!  Made the song soar that much more!  Patrick seems like such a down home, genuine guy.  Great job!

Another great thing about this show is that the coaches perform.  Not only did they perform as a group, but each coach performs with their team of contestants!  THAT was great:

TEAM CHRISTINA  Lady Marmalade:

Christina’s outfits NEED to go.  WHY does she dress like this all the time?!  She doesn’t NEED to!

TEAM BLAKE  This Love:

LOVED that Blake did a Maroon5/Adam Levine song!  AWESOME! :)   How cute is that?!

Great show!  Looking forward to Cee Lo & Adam’s teams next week!
