GLEE SEASON 4 NEWS: Graduating, Spin-Off, etc.

Major announcements about Season 4 revealed today (via FOX boss Kevin Reilly):

  • There will NOT be a Glee spin-off.  “We are graduating the characters that are arcing to graduation. There will not be a spinoff.”
  • Lea Michele WILL be back for Season 4!  YAY!  That’s pretty much ALL I needed to know. :) Now I’m good!  I can actually WATCH next season! ;)
  • As for the rest of the characters that are graduating:  “Creatively, we’d want everybody back. I’ve got to look at the contractual situation for all of those. And we will. I don’t want to…get into details. I’m just trying to whet your appetite. But I think it’s going to be a good thing for the show. It’s cool. It’s different.”

Hmm…What do you think Ryan Murphy has in store for the graduating characters?

THE GLEE PROJECT 8/21/11: 1.10 “Glee-ality” (Season Finale)

After the whole summer of this first season, the finale is finally here!

What better person to be the last “mentor” for the contestants, but Ryan Murphy himself!  BTW, gotta love that jacket of his! ;)

Besides having Ryan as the mentor, what better song to have as their last Homework Assignment — Don’t Stop Believin’…Not to mention having ALL the previous contestants return to back them up!  Yay!

The fact that the group got to perform this week’s music video, Raise Your Glass, on a helipad up on the top of a skyscraper?  Pretty awesome.  And once again what a perfect song for their last number!

Very cute (or should I say intimidating?) to have all (most) of the previous guest mentors there in the audience for each of the contestant’s last-chance performances!

RESULTS:

I do have to say the results were a BIT anticlimactic…only because you expected to have only ONE winner…but that wasn’t the case!  They ALL kind of won, really…which was kind of like…Eh.  I mean, don’t get me wrong…it was SO GREAT of the producers/Ryan to give EACH of the contestants a role on Glee, but I would’ve enjoyed it more if only one of them actually won.

On the other hand, because they made it seem like Samuel would’ve been the winner had they only picked one, I’m glad they picked Damian as the co-winner!  I still don’t see Sam matching the show.  I think he should stick to being just a music artist instead.  Damian on the other hand will do AMAZING on the show.  He’s already the guy that EVERYONE has been rooting for this whole season…He’s definitely the “comeback kid.”  He did a last-chance performance like 6 or 7 times this whole season!  Man!  In a way, performing in front of Ryan THAT MUCH probably actually HELPED Damian since Ryan could really see his growth and see his charisma and charm that many of the fans see. ;)

How lucky are Lindsay & Alex that they each got a 2-episode stint as well?!  Lindsay definitely is a great actress, so I’m glad she’ll be able to show some of that off.  I hope that even tho they only have 2 episodes, that they also get to sing on the show!  Would love to hear Lindsay sing something!  I read somewhere that supposedly Lindsay’s role is going to be as a “mean girl” Cheerio…which I could totally see being true.  Alex’s role, on the other hand, seems a  bit harder to predict…2 episodes really isn’t much to develop a character, so I wonder what they’re going to end up writing for him…

When this season first started, I wondered if I’d be able to get into it…but gotta say I really did enjoy watching the show!  At the end of the credits of the finale they did do a shout out to America about auditions if anyone would be interested in being on The Glee Project, so I’m guessing they’re going to do another season?

This show tided me over and helped cure a BIT of the “Glee withdrawals,” so now I only have to wait a few weeks for the new season of Glee to start…Yay!  Can’t wait!  And can’t wait to see all these Glee Project winners on the show! :)

THE GLEE PROJECT 7/31/11: Sexuality

Well, this week was all about acting.  Acting sexual.  Just some quick thoughts:

  • Samuel won AGAIN?!  I really wanted Hannah to win!  Very cool that Mark Salling pointed Hannah out and said how for majority of the Homework Assignment performance, he was watching her! :)
  • Sam & Alex being paired up as a couple for the music video was a bit…awkward, to say the least.  I guess gotta give Sam credit for being able to suck it up and perform it.  Alex was a bit much with his performance.
  • Once again, Lindsay went “all out” and went in for the kiss with Damien.  She is quite good at the acting aspect of this whole competition tho.  I was surprised at how much she struggled with the vocals this week tho.  She obviously isn’t AS versatile as I thought.  See…they’re never going to find someone as good as Lea Michele. ;)  They just won’t.
  • Why are we not surprised that Cameron had a hard time with this week’s theme?  I still don’t understand HOW he thought he could win this thing withOUT being able to do the intimate scenes/acting?  I guess he didn’t know how it would make him feel until he was put in the situation.
  • BOTTOM 3:  Not a surprising group by any means.  So Sam STILL is the ONLY one to NEVER perform for Ryan yet.  Is that a sign?  I hope not!

RESULTS:  Cameron leaving resulted in mixed feelings for me.  On one hand, I still felt that he really matched Glee…a LOT.  I could see him on the show.  When he performed Blackbird for his last chance performance…He was great!  On the other hand tho, I also felt it was TIME.  He had been going downhill for weeks now, and with all these moral issues, I did feel like he just wouldn’t fit.  The show would’ve had too many problems with him and the types of scenes he would be willing to participate in, etc.  Too much of a gamble.  Glad he left on his own.  Altho…to think that Ryan Murphy GAVE HIM another week and was almost begging him to stay…it’s like, how do you turn that down?!  But Cameron did.  Knowing that he ended up saving Damien from elimination by leaving, I’m sure Cameron didn’t regret it.  I think he should just stick to being a musician and singer.

On a side note, at the end when Cameron was singing Keep Holding On…Umm, his recorded voice sounds AMAZING!  He REALLY should just stick to the singing.

We’re really coming down to the wire now…Top 5!

‘Til next week…

RYAN MURPHY: Deadline Interview

After all the HOOPLA about the Glee kids leaving/not leaving, Ryan Murphy finally did an interview with Deadline to set the record straight (altho some would argue whether or not it really IS settled yet…):

Allison Hope Weiner: So what is accurate and inaccurate about Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith staying, leaving, what they claim, and what you told them?

Ryan Murphy: I said two things in an interview: I said, yes, they are graduating and they will not be back on the show for Season Four. And when I did that interview, what was happening was we were asked to investigate doing a spin-off and it was a spin-off specifically for three of them, Chris, Cory and Lea. In March, Brad Falchuk and I started talking to all three of those actors about it because you can’t make people do spin-offs. So, we went to them and asked, ‘What do you think about this? Are you interested? If you are interested, what would you want your character to do? Where do you think we should shoot it?’ So, it was a discussion with all three of those actors about it. At the time, all three of them expressed interest. ‘Yeah, that sounds good. It’s good to graduate. It’s good to grow the characters. It’s good to not have to sit in that choir room. It’s good to sort of expand and continue the evolution of these people.’ They were involved in the process for 3 to 4 months to the point where we were even talking about cities and relocations and we called Julliard and what would that mean and how would we do it. So, for any of those actors to say, ‘I found out that I was fired off the show from Twitter,’ is absolutely 100% not true. None of them were fired. It was never about that. We were going to do a spin-off where the three of them were going to go on.  They all knew what was happening, they all had approved it, they all said they wanted to do it. Some of them had different caveats. Some of them, to be honest, were not thrilled about moving to a different city. Some had families here and some had families elsewhere. I feel sensitive about that. So then what happened was it blew up and a lot of articles were written about it. Some people were writing they’re not on the show so that means they must be fired. Well, no. That was 100% incorrect.

Weiner: How did it get so wrong?

Murphy: I think that some of those actors’ representatives spun it in a certain way, to be quite honest, I don’t understand. We weren’t allowed to talk about a spin-off. It was too premature. We didn’t want to do it then. The idea was to do it this fall when Glee gets back on the air.  Then, to pick up and read the actors saying, “We found out we were fired from Twitter.” All of us, the studio, the network, were like, ‘OK, that isn’t exactly cool,’ because we involved all three of them in that decision. So then what happened is that we decided, ‘OK, let’s not do it.’ So that’s where we are today. Maybe we’ll talk about it in April or May, but for now let’s just concentrate on making Season 3 the best that we can do. When I say they’re seniors and they’re not coming back to the show, what I did not say is they’re not coming back to the show because there will be another show. What Brad [Falchuk] said this weekend at Comic-Con is now correct: they’re graduating. What we wanted is to get people away from this idea that the actors were fired which is ludicrous. Nobody was fired. They were talked to for months about the show.

Weiner: So is anyone getting things ready for a spin-off?

Murphy: We were. Not now.

Weiner: You’re just putting it on hold in terms of sending them to a place like Julliard?

Murphy: That was the original place. That was what [last season's] whole New York Episode was about, the finale. But to be honest, since then because of the press and because of the perception and because Brad and I have had another show picked up, we have simply stopped with everyone’s understanding. You know, I had dinner with Lea last night where we talked about it. We don’t know what we’re going to do. We were going to start talking about it in September and now we’re not. We’re going to talk about it in April. The thing that I really wanted to reiterate was that no one was ever going to be fired. And the actors were very involved in the idea. Cory was discussed. Chris was discussed. We talked to Naya. We talked to the kids. And I think that the media has glommed on to this idea that we were graduating them and firing them and bringing in like Glee Project kids.

Weiner: I don’t think that’s fair about the media. These kids said things.

Murphy: Maybe they did. If they did, I think that I can say on behalf on Brad and myself that if they tried to spin it that they were under the thumb of the evil showrunners who were trying to manipulate them, I say, ‘Well, I’m sorry about that. They know that’s not true.’ But I don’t think that they think that. I don’t think Chris and Corey and Lea think that. I think it was a story that, because the truth couldn’t come out, blossomed into a thing.  I’ve learned a lesson from this experience. I’ve learned to really really monitor what I say. Before I didn’t do that. My bad. Stupid. Particularly what has happened with Glee. I just read an article that Glee is one of the most discussed shows on the Internet between the blogs and the recap. Fans are excited. If I don’t keep them excited and involved, that’s my job. Glee is not Super 8 trying to keep something secret. The monster here was the spin-off and now it’s enough.

Weiner: I want to be clear about this: it’s still going forward or it’s not?

Murphy: We were actively talking to actors, we were actively writing, we were actively getting ready to pitch. OK, here’s the three actors, and they want to do it, so here’s the story for them. Now that that has collapsed. We’re not talking about it, we’re not pitching it. We’re not doing anything for the next several months except for this third season. I would prefer and I know Brad would prefer and I think the actors will prefer to roll up our sleeves and do a really good season and if there is a spin-off, talk about it in April. Could we do a spin-off? To be quite honest with you, maybe. Some of the actors that we discussed doing spin-offs do not want to do a spin-off. It’s hard to do a spin-off on a show where an actor says no. And if there’s no spin-off, then we’ll announce that there’s not. But as of now, I can tell you I’m not working on it.

Hmm…so there WAS a spin-off being discussed.  Interesting.  That would explain Lea Michele’s tweet when the news of them leaving first broke out:

@msleamichele“We always knew we’d graduate in real time. It’s all part of the plan and it’s all good! It’s going to make Season 3 amazing!!!”

I guess I should be happy about this news…but the way that the story keeps “changing,” I’m still not totally confident in what’s really going to happen.  But at least this is giving me a lot more hope that I will still be able to watch this show after Season 3! ;-)

GLEE NEWS: Season 4 – Lea + Chris + Cory = OUT

You have NO IDEA (altho you kinda do) how much it PAINS me to have to post this…

It has just been announced (Ryan Murphy has announced it) that Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith will NOT be returning for Season 4 of Glee! :(

Umm…HOW SAD AM I?!

Glee creator Ryan Murphy was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter and said that the three stars are “not going to be back at all for Season 4,” Murphy said. “You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”

“We made that decision and I involved Chris and Lea and they thought that was a good idea,” Murphy told THR. “They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top.”

As for what will happen this upcoming season, Murphy said planning for the future will serve as a major theme this coming season. “I’m much more interested in Lea’s character — not so much on her relationship with Finn, but more on what her dreams are beyond high school and how she plans on getting them.”

Altho he specifically named them, it seems like they won’t be the only ones… more characters are leaving than are staying and left an open question as to who else will say goodbye to New Directions for good.

Exactly who’s in and who’s out for Season 4 will be revealed in the third season premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Although I knew this day would come, it’s still so hard to actually hear FOR SURE that they (ESPECIALLY LEA) won’t be back after this next season.  Seriously don’t know how I can continue watching it without them.

It’s a SAD DAY…

GLEE GUEST STAR CONFIRMED: Anne Hathaway!

When you “hock” yourself in an interview, it really WORKS! ;)   Last month I posted a video interview of Anne Hathaway on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, how she would love to be on Glee and has already basically “written” a part for herself. :)

Well, looks like her wish came true!  Glee’s creator Ryan Murphy has now confirmed that Anne WILL be on the show! How cool is that?! Whether or not she’ll actually be playing the part she “WROTE HERSELF,” we shall see… ;)

GLEE RUMOR: Justin Bieber Episode – FALSE!

Twitter was EXPLODING today with reports that Glee would be doing a JUSTIN BIEBER-CENTRIC episode this season.

BUT…

…THANK GOD it was ONLY  a rumor!  Glee creator Ryan Murphy spoke exclusively to Perez Hilton and explained:

“Glee is NOT doing a Justin Bieber tribute episode. We are not doing any more of those this season. Those are reserved for artists with a big catalogue, ala Madonna and Britney, etc.”

“We are doing an episode where Sam sings a JB song to win Quinn back…and copies his hairstyle, etc. But it’s a small part of a big episode that has a LOT of other things going on.”

When I first heard the rumor I was like, “Now THAT’S going TOO FAR with the theme episodes!”  I mean…Madonna – OK…Britney – I can see…but JUSTIN BIEBER?!  GIVE ME A BREAK!  Doing A SONG of his in an episode…fine.  I mean, his music IS in the popular mainstream right now, so that’s justified, but a WHOLE EPISODE devoted to him?!

THANK GOODNESS!

We can all rest easy now… ;)

Glee Returns with Season High Ratings!

As expected, Glee returned last night with a BANG!

Glee drew 13.6 million viewers, retaining 78 percent of American Idol‘s audience (20.2 million viewers), according to Nielsen overnight estimates. The show also claimed its highest-ever rating among 18-to-49-year-olds and the highest Nielsen rating of any scripted freshman show this season, according to Fox. Additionally, the episode improved 44 percent over the post-Idol-finale preview last May. Source

Ryan Murphy (co-creator) reacts to the ratings:

“Everybody thought Fox was crazy to have the Sectionals in December and then pull it off the air for four months,” says Murphy, who spoke to EW exclusively. “They got a lot of criticism for it, but (the ratings) prove that it was a great plan. It really worked. In those four months we won the Golden Globe and a Peabody, and with the Oprah/White House effect, it became a perfect storm to get people really excited about the show.” I didn’t necessarily think it was a BAD idea as far as ratings go…I was just SAD that I’d have to WAIT THAT LONG for another new episode!

Even Murphy started to question whether the show was getting too much attention in the weeks leading up to the premiere. “I was like, enough,” he told EW. “You should see all the stuff I turn down and the cast turns down. We really try not to over-expose it but at a certain point it takes on a life of its own and there’s nothing you can do.” Wow, to think they even TURNED DOWN offers to help promote the show even MOREMan.  ‘Cause there was a LOT of PUBLICITY/HYPE for the show… Source

Great job gleeks!  Hopefully the ratings will stay up there!  Umm…with the Madonna episode coming up next week, I’m SURE the ratings won’t be hurting too much. ;)

MORE GLEE next season?!

Their first season hasn’t even ended yet, but there are talks about Season 2 of Glee already!

According to Entertainment Weekly, creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed that next season will be “much bigger and much longerWe are talking about doing 25 episodes as opposed to [the customary] 22.”

Can I get a WOOHOO?! :)

Ryan Murphy also goes on to say that he hopes during season 2, he can “inject the show’s sophomore season with a “sweet feeling… like I loved it when The Brady Bunch went to Hawaii. I want [New Directions] to go to some competition in New York.”  A location shoot/trip episode would be VERY COOL.  And New York?!  How awesome would that be?!

I doubt there will be any complaints about adding more new episodes to next season!  Already this season’s HUGE BREAK is a killer for us Gleeks…can’t wait!

Major Glee Spoilers!

Entertainment Weekly was able to get some MAJOR spoilers about the show from creator Ryan Murphy:

  • What I’ve been waiting for! – Rachel & Puck are getting together AGAIN!  According to Ryan, “I was really surprised [viewers responded so favorably to that pairing],” he says. “I thought people would find her to be far too irritating for him. But by the time [we heard that feedback], we had already shot the first 13 [episodes]. But because I read that — in your column, actually, so you get the blame — I was like, ‘I’m going to get them together in some way.’ So we just finished [writing] a special episode where they are together, and they have two numbers together. It’s episode 4, ‘Bad Reputation.’” YES!  CANNOT WAIT!
  • They are REALLY hyping up that Modonna-themed episode!  10 musical numbers!  Seriously?!  That’s huge!
  • Info on 2 of the 3 NEW cast members they are having the open casting call for: “We just announced we’re doing a nationwide search for the season 2 cast, and [a boyfriend for Kurt is] one of the three roles that we’re adding. And we’re going to make them a power couple. We’re not going to do the whole hiding in the shadows thing. We’re going to make them popular, and out and proud and glamorous. Like prom king and king. We’re doing the opposite of what’s been done.” But wait, there’s more: “We’re also casting sort of a Eve Harrington [from All About Eve] to kind of steal Rachel’s thunder a little. So those are two of the three.” How fun!  At least now we know kind of what they’re looking for…those are both TOUGH roles to fill!
  • More on upcoming guest stars – Jennifer Lopez wants to do the show, so I’m going to meet with her. In the past couple of months, a lot of people are coming out saying they love the show and would I meet with them and write something. But I don’t want to stunt-cast too much, because I think the [musical] numbers are already so extravagant. If I do Jennifer, I would want her to be, like, a lunch lady. And [exec producer] Brad Falchuk is obsessed with having Bruce Springsteen on the show, so I’m sure we’ll go after him at some point.” Jennifer Lopez as a lunch lady?!  That would be AWESOME!

Those are actually REALLY TELLING spoilers/scoop!  Awesome!  Talk about adding to the anticipation of the show returning!  COME ON!  Move up that return date!

Original Songs Coming to Glee!

According to a Billboard interview with creator Ryan Murphy, coming up in the 2nd half of Glee’s first season will be an episode titled “Original Song,” which will feature actual ORIGINAL SONGS written specifically for the show!

According to Ryan Murphy, there are QUITE a few songwriters who have approached the show, asking if they can write songs/submit songs to be sung on the show:

“I’ve had a lot of calls from songwriters, to the point where it’s kind of embarrassing and ridiculous,” he says. “So we’re writing an episode called ‘Original Song’ where the teacher asks the kids to write their own piece of music. Diane Warren is going to do two big ballads, and if it works, we’ll see what happens . . . but we won’t do it all the time.”

Also, Ryan Tedder (lead singer of OneRepublic…he wrote songs like Beyonce’s “Halo” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone”) has also been approached to write an original song for the show:

“They actually just approached me. Adam Anders, the guy who does all the music, approached me about two weeks ago to do original music for the next season. So I’m gonna be doing at least one song for the next season that’s original.”

Up until now, Glee consisted of ONLY COVER SONGS (which I do love too, btw)…it’ll be SO COOL to hear totally new songs debuted on the show!  The singers are all good enough where they deserve to be singing some of “their” own stuff instead of just re-singing other people’s songs!

AWESOME!  Can’t wait for that!
