US Open: Serena Williams apologizes

This is a bit late, since it happened on Saturday, but…I’m sure you all heard about the “racket” Serena Williams caused during her semi-final match against Kim Clijsters.

A lineswoman called a foot fault penalty on one of Serena’s serves…in return, Serena verbally attacked the lineswoman, telling her “If I could, I would take this (expletive) ball and show it down your (expletive) throat.”  This caused her to be assessed a point penalty, and it just so happened that point penalty lost her the match.  Kim Clijsters moved on to the Women’s Final, where she ended up winning the championship.

Today, Serena issued a statement regarding the incident and her behavior:  “I want to amend my press statement of yesterday and want to make it clear as possible — I want to sincerely apologize first to the lineswoman, Kim Clijsters, the USTA and mostly tennis fans everywhere for my inappropriate outburst. I’m a woman of great pride, faith and integrity and I admit when I’m wrong.” (taken from JustJared)

I also read that Serena was fined $10,500 for the incident, and they’re contemplating on fining her even more.  Serena has always been VERY aggressive, and a bit of a hothead.  But what a way to end the tournament…MORE drama.
